Family, friends, and relatives followed a young
Marine solider down Main Street of Eagle Butte,
S.D. on July 7, to commemorate him as he prepares
to leave for Iraq.
Karlyle Brings Plenty, Cetan Situpi Luta Akisa
Numpa, (Two Red Tailed Hawks that Want to Be Heard)
an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux
Tribe will leave for Iraq at the end of July, 2005.
The US Marine is the 18 year-old son of Arlene
Chasing Hawk and Stephen (Rebecca) Brings Plenty
of Eagle Butte. He was a graduate of Cheyenne Eagle
Butte High School in 2004 and has actively been
in the United States Marines since September 2004.
In admiration of Karlyle’s depart, family
and friends walked from the Middle School down
to the tree of yellow ribbons and the “We
Support Our Troops” sign, where he was greeted
by more family and friends.
Cheyenne River Veterans held their flags with
pride as Veteran; Phillip Blue Coat gave an opening
prayer for Karlyle and his family.
Karlyle stood in front of the Veteran’s
tree with a yellow ribbon in his right hand, while
the drum group, Wakpa Waste, sang an honor song.
Karlyle Brings Plenty, Private First Class, was
written on the ribbon and tied carefully on the
tree. Family and friends stood in line to hug and
shake the hand of the young soldier.
Subsequent to the yellow ribbon event, dinner
was held at the Tribal Council Chambers. Karlyle
was presented with a star quilt by the Cheyenne
River Sioux Tribal Chairman, Harold Frazier and
tribal councilmen in honor of his departure to
Iraq.
Chairman Harold Frazier said, “We
are so lucky to have young men like you who are
fighting for our country, but also fighting for
our people. May the Great Spirit guide you and
keep you safe. You are in our Prayers!”
